Research has been found that more cases of type 1 diabetes are diagnosed in northern climates, leading researchers to suggest that environmental triggers play a role in the development of type 1 diabetes. Specifically, viral infections (which happen more often in colder northern climates where people are in close proximity) may trigger type 1.
Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. Only 5% of people with diabetes have type 1 diabetes, the other percentage have type 2 diabetes.

Taking insulin keeps type 1 diabetics alive, but does not cure diabetes. While progress towards a cure has been substantial, there is still no cure for diabetes.
Limiting sweets will help people with type 1 diabetes keep their blood sugar under control, but, with advice from their doctor or dietician, sweets can fit into meal plans, just as they would for people without diabetes. (Also Diabetics do not like to be told NOT to eat something!)
